  • 50 Years of Luther Arkwright at the Cartoon Museum

The Cartoon Museum’s exhibition on Luther Arkwright opened on 14 June, and runs until 2 October.

  • The Naked Artist

I was unaware this book even existed until I came across it while mindlessly browsing Amazon one day. It’s not even listed on the official Bryan Talbot page, for god’s sake! It’s a collection of anecdotes, some true, some possibly apocryphal, that recount embarrassing and sometimes near-unbelievable stories about comics creators.

  • Grandville

This 2009 graphic novel seems to have done sufficiently well to produce a recent sequel, Grandville Mon Amour. It is a rather odd beast, presenting us with a story set in a world where France won the Napoleonic Wars and still rules the continent in the early 21st century, with Britain having been granted independence only a few decades earlier. The story is mostly set in Paris, now renamed Grandville (hence the title), now a kind of steampunk theme park with excitingly retro-futuristic technology.

  • Lady Mechanika 1

I’d never heard of the title, creator or publishers, but when I picked it up for a look, the interior art reminded me a little of Bryan Talbot in its finishing, and the clothes and settings are steampunk, something Bryan has worked with at least a few times.

  • Grandville Mon Amour

The first thing that strikes you about this is that it’s a really lovely volume – a large hardback, perfectly printed on thick glossy paper, with a striking embossed two-colour cover. The next thing you notice, without any surprise for anyone who knows Bryan’s work, is that the beauty of the art justifies and all but demands such treatment.
