  • Alpha Flight 0.1

Wait, 0.1? We need a jumping-on point BEFORE the first issue proper? How is a first issue not a good enough jumping on point, exactly? Oh well, let’s read this as if it is a first issue, okay?

  • Herc 1

This is a good first issue, and it does pretty much everything you want a fresh start to do. We get an opening fight scene, making clear that Hercules is now mortal and vulnerable, but still strong and with an array of ancient magical weapons. We get what looks like a new supporting cast, which also gives him a job and a place to live. We get mysterious voices of worship, suggesting that his demigodhood is not entirely dispensed with (and being a superhero comic, we can have no doubt that it will be returned sooner or later). Finally, we get some more action, leading to confrontation with the (or a?) Hobgoblin, who is working for the Kingpin.

  • Silver Surfer 1

Oh, look, it’s the return of the Silver Surfer again. Oh my Shalla Bal! Oh, my Zenn-La! Woe is me and shalt I talk in a florid sub-Shakespearean language that invariably ends in exclamation marks?! Shalt I ever develop a sense of humour or shalt I muse over the world’s follies in an obviously messianic fashion?! In my dotage shalt I join my namesakes and take to browsing the web and contacting distant friends via Facebook?!

  • Incredible Hulks 618

Marvel and DC’s business strategy to the symptom of plummeting sales seems to be this: spin off your most popular characters into second and third and fourth books. Spin-off the spin-offs. Then involve them in one long, universe-threatening, cross-over.
