  • Veronica 202

It was with surprise, and not a little scepticism, that people heard the news that Archie Comics would be introducing their first openly gay character in Veronica #202.

  • Dick Briefer’s Frankenstein

If this book, the first volume in IDW’s “Chilling Archives of Horror Comics”, is any indication of what the future holds in store, we’re in for a treat. This gorgeous large-size hardback is priced to be affordable, loaded with wonderful artwork, printed beautifully and selected appropriately to showcase all the different faces of Dick Briefer’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

  • Finger Prints

This is an absolutely fascinating, compelling and disturbing graphic novel. The sophistication is in the thinking behind the story: this is a rich examination of ideas of beauty and the pressures to maintain it, and especially those on women and how that reflects on their position in the world.

  • Market Day

Graphic novels which attempt ambitious work in a self-consciously “literary” manner are still unusual enough that the appearance of a new one, however successfully it achieves its aims, is always cause for comment. James Sturm has been one of the quieter art-comics auteurs for a while now, steadily mining a seam of historical-realist narratives that rely on no flashy formal play or outrageous social commentary; his stories, like his artwork, are direct, to-the-point, and superbly crafted.

  • Avengers 7

You can’t deny that at times Bendis is keen on LONG conversations with very little happening. He defines the tendency towards ‘decompression’ – which means telling stories that in years past would have taken one issue over six issues.

  • Supergirl 58

I read this on a whim. Even back in the days when I read superhero comics with any regularity, Supergirl was never one of my favourites. Any memories I have of the character are tied up in reprints of the Maggin/Swan stories from the 1960s, and I usually envisage her accompanied by a menagerie of super animals.

  • AX: Alternative Manga 1

This 400-page collection is a selection of the best from alternative Japanese anthology AX: outsider material, a lot of it with an approach or attitude that would be unacceptable in the big mainstream publications.

  • Warlord of Mars 1

When I read positive reactions to the first issue of Warlord of Mars, and heard that its publisher felt confident enough about it to sell it for one dollar, I felt elated, excited and relieved.

  • Batman Inc. etc.

The changes Grant Morrison is making now were not expected. Batman Incorporated: a whole organisation of Batmen and associated characters. It’s one of the most daring changes I’ve seen, given the huge stature of the character – but is it a good move?

  • Knight & Squire 2

There’s a very specific set of people that Knight and Squire is going to sell to. It’s a shame, really, that that group (UK-based superhero fans) is such a small subset of the comics-buying public as a whole – because despite its wit and charm, the series is going to leave the dominant US-based market, on the whole, somewhat baffled by its firmly British eccentricities.
