Monotony, But Not Monogamy…

by 19-Oct-13

It’s male harem time in 1966, as a Hawkman villainess gets away with a lot more than the Comics Code Authority usually permitted…

A Tip of The Hat I Never Wear to FA Alumnus Keith Williams, for drawing this panel to my attention from 1966’s Hawkman 13, “Quest of the Immortal Queen!”, scripted by Gardner Fox and drawn by the superlative Murphy Anderson.

Our villainess, Alvit, kidnaps champions and compels them to be her husbands – then, when she gets bored, freezes them and goes shopping for a new hubby!

The startling thing about this is that her ex-husbands aren’t dead – as demonstrated later in the story, when she ‘unfreezes’ them all to attack Hawkman (on whom she has her eye as her next husband, despite the pesky detail of his being already married) and Hawkgirl – so in a 1966 Comics Code Approved book, she was explicitly, and comprehensively, adulterous! (Bigamous? Polyamorous? Doing the Naughty, anyway…)

Somebody at the CCA must have been nodding off over the proof pages that day…

(Oh, and Queen Alvit? If you’re bored with your husbands one at a time, why not try a ‘combo menu’? Mix n’ Match a little! Just a suggestion, Your Majesty…)
